FARM: Finca Hartmann

BEHIND PRODUCTION
Finca Hartmann is one of Panama’s pioneering specialty coffee estates, where generations of the Hartmann family have dedicated themselves to cultivating exceptional coffees while preserving the surrounding natural environment. The family’s coffee-growing heritage traces back to Alois Hartmann, who settled in Panama in 1912. His son, Ratibor Hartmann, subsequently developed the estate, establishing the foundations of what would become one of the country’s most respected family-run coffee operations. Today, the farm is managed by the next generation: Ratibor, Allan, Alexander, Aliss and Kelly Hartmann. Each contributes different expertise, from cultivation and processing to quality control and farm management. Their philosophy centres on growing coffee in harmony with nature. Rather than clearing the surrounding rainforest, the family preserves native trees and cultivates coffee beneath the forest canopy, maintaining an environment rich in biodiversity. Among the varieties cultivated at the estate is Wush Wush, a rare Arabica of Ethiopian origin, recognised for its distinctive floral character and remarkable aromatic complexity. For this coffee, the Hartmann family’s experience meets Anaerobic Washed processing, producing an elegant sensory profile that combines jasmine, tangerine and citrus with the delicacy of black tea.
LOCATION
Finca Hartmann is located in Santa Clara, within the Renacimiento district of Panama’s Chiriquí Province, close to the Costa Rican border. The estate comprises coffee-growing areas surrounded by native rainforest, with elevations ranging approximately from 1,300 to 2,000 metres above sea level. Parts of the property border forest reserves associated with La Amistad National Park, one of Central America’s most important protected natural landscapes. At 1,700 metres, the Wush Wush grows in a highland environment characterised by forest shade, cooler temperatures and diverse microclimatic conditions. The surrounding vegetation helps moderate sunlight and temperature fluctuations, creating favourable conditions for coffee cultivation. The combination of altitude, forest biodiversity and careful agricultural management makes Santa Clara a distinctive environment for specialty coffee production. These natural conditions, together with the Hartmann family’s longstanding expertise, contribute to the remarkable potential of coffees cultivated in this part of Panama.

Wush Wush is a rare Arabica variety originating from the highlands of southwestern Ethiopia, named after the Wushwush area in the Keffa region. Like Panama’s celebrated Geisha, Wush Wush belongs to Ethiopia’s extraordinary coffee heritage and has attracted increasing attention among specialty coffee producers for its distinctive aromatic character. The variety is known for its relatively low productivity and its potential to develop intensely floral, delicate and complex sensory profiles. Its cultivation in Central and South America represents an interesting chapter in the exploration of Ethiopian coffee genetics beyond their original growing regions. At Finca Hartmann, Wush Wush is cultivated in the forested highlands of Chiriquí, where the family’s careful agricultural practices provide the foundation for its development. The Anaerobic Washed process introduces another layer of complexity. Fermentation takes place under oxygen-limited conditions, allowing controlled microbial activity to influence the coffee’s aromatic development. The coffee is subsequently washed and carefully dried, helping create a balance between fermentation-derived complexity and the clarity traditionally associated with washed processing. In KUDU’s Wush Wush, these elements come together in a particularly elegant expression. Jasmine and tangerine aromas introduce delicate notes of black tea, mandarin and citrus, carried by a silky, tea-like body. The experience concludes with a floral, citrusy and clean finish, showcasing the remarkable delicacy and aromatic precision of this distinctive Panamanian coffee.
